What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in hair. My mother owned her own hair salon and the introduction into hair care was made early on. While taking cosmetology in high school I completed the hours needed to obtain my Tennessee state Board Cosmetology license. I obtained an associates degree in Chemical Engineering while I worked at a company called Keystone (Long Aid Hair care products). I started my own Business in 1989 while working with Keystone. Then I left to start school for my BS in Chemistry at Lemoyne because my interests in hair had evolved and I wanted a deeper understanding of what works best for hair strands. I wanted to become more involved in formulation. I’ve continued to expand my education on cosmetic science because I knew I wanted the ability to formulate hair care products that corrects and/or enhance the texture and healthy appearance of hair cuticles.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Don’t be afraid. You have all you need to win! What you don’t have you don’t need at this time. Move toward your Passion!

What is the favorite part of your job?

The thrill of researching and learning something new about hair and then working to apply that newfound knowledge to my next formulation.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

Owning and operating  Today’s Highlight & Style for over 27 years where healthy hair is our business and formulating products that works. Being a business owner fills me with tremendous pride. Everyday my salon open its doors, I feel like I’ve accomplished one of my biggest goals ever!

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

Being a member of the SCC has been great for me. It has offered me an opportunity to learn more about my craft through the CEP courses and if I can’t make a course, the Journal of Cosmetic Science Book provides great insight on research. I also love networking with others who share the same passion I do for hair care, either as  a formulator, raw material sales person or cosmetologist. Honestly, the SCC has given me an environment where I can flourish.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and singing Karaoke
