What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

When I was a teenager, I read a beauty magazine that quoted a cosmetic chemist and instantly knew that’s what I wanted to be. What most excited me is the ability to be both a scientist and businesswoman in an industry that produces products that impact users’ health and self confidence. After graduating from college with degrees in Chemistry and Markets & Management, I decided to pursue a PhD in Pharmaceutical/Cosmetic Science at UC in order to gain more specific and advanced knowledge and experience in the field.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
To fellow students – learn as much as you can from those who are already successful in the roles you one day wish to hold.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I love leaving the lab every day feeling like an innovator. My research requires me to be creative and a problem solver on a daily basis. I appreciate working with my peers and learning from the experiences of my mentors.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

Last year, I reached PhD candidacy with the approval of my thesis project proposal

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

As a graduate student, membership in the SCC has connected me with industry professionals and been an additional source of education. Attending quarterly OVSCC meetings has allowed me to network and build relationships with scientists working in the field. They have also given me numerous opportunities to attend seminars and present my own research. The SCC is very supportive of its student members and has facilitated my participation at its national scientific meetings. Learning from the experiences of SCC members at these meetings has been invaluable.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

My favorite way to explore a new city is to go to the local farmers market.
