What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

I have always been interested in the process of making cosmetics and how they make consumers feel.  I joined Mary Kay in 1991, and it has maintained my interest throughout the years.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry? Listen to the veterans in the industry who have been at this a while, but be assertive in what you believe you can do.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I most enjoy working with the formulators and the development of new formulas.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

I was a leader on the Continuous Improvement Team that streamlined our alternative source process to react to supply disruptions and keep our production lines running during this pandemic. I am also proud to serve as the chair of our chapter’s suppliers’ day for the past three events, which has grown substantially over the years.  I am excited to be the Chair again this year and really looking forward to the fun and success for the exhibitors and attendees.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

Relationships!! I have met so many different individuals within this organization that have helped me learn about this industry and grow my professional career.

How has attending the SCC Annual Meeting in December helped you?

As a board member, it has been extremely valuable to meet with other chapters and learn what they are doing within their areas. It is a very collaborative experience when all of the chapters’ representatives are together.  During the pandemic, although we met virtually, I missed seeing everyone in person. Also attending the presentations is always interesting (although some of it is over my head as I am not a scientist 😊). I also enjoy seeing the suppliers’ posters where they are providing their new innovative materials.

How has attending a Continuing Education Program (CEP Course) helped you?

Attending these courses has helped me learn about trends, current initiatives in the market, and other relevant topics. These course have helped me in negotiations with suppliers.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

First thing is that I love my son with all my heart! What is fun about my life is on a trip to California earlier in my career, I agreed to visit some wineries in Temecula. I was not a big fan of wine at the time, but after that visit, I learned a lot and became a fan.  Now, I really enjoy visiting different wineries around the country and learning about their approach to making wine. We have over 500 here in Texas, and I have visited over half of them. I love visiting the smaller ones where I can speak with the actual wine maker, and I learn so much. They are the chemists of wines!
Also, when I turned 40, I went on a cruise in Mexico, on my 50th birthday I was at Graceland (huge Elvis fan), and I am hoping on my 60th birthday (many years from now!), I will be at Niagara Falls!

I enjoy life, and I enjoy being involved with the personal care industry and the SCC. I love being around people and don’t like to stay at home. It was very hard during 2020 to stay at home so much, but it was necessary, and I am glad that we are getting back to doing things in person.
