What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

I majored in Biology in college. Once I graduated, I wanted a job within business that would make use of my scientific training. Bob Taylor lived near my family home and I had gone to high school with his daughter. I was familiar with his small and growing company, Village Bath Products, which by 1980 had grown into Minnetonka, Inc. and just launched SoftSoap. I cold called asking if there were any openings and, as they say, “the rest is history.”  I was hired into their R&D department.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Be confident in your ability and bold in your decisions.

What is the favorite part of your job?

There are many aspects of the job that I enjoy. I love the mix of business and science. I enjoy the fast pace and seeing products that I have developed on the store shelves. I enjoy the challenge of using my technical background to solve formulation and commercialization problems. I love working with smart, educated scientists as colleagues.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

I completed a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership in 2011.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

The Twin Cities SCC has a place in my heart. In the early years, it gave me a sense of professionalism and connected me to the personal care industry throughout the metro area. When I returned to work after several years at home with my children, I immediately connected to colleagues through the SCC. The relationships I have formed through participation in the SCC have enriched my personal and professional life. It has been an invaluable networking tool.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

My favorite way to relax is walks in the woods with my husband and three children.
