What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

Growing up I always loved cosmetics and skin care products. As I grew older I became very interested in Chemistry and chose to pursue an education in Pharmaceutical Sciences. During my time at Campbell University I was offered an opportunity to intern at Xytrus which lead to my dream job in the personal care industry.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Learn as much as you can about everything from your colleagues whether it be from SCC members or people in your company. They are often willing to help solve any problem you may face while formulating.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I love having the opportunity to spend time in the lab creating new formulations. My job allows me to use my creativity to come up with new product ideas for people. In the personal care market, you never know what’s coming next. It’s interesting to try to predict and formulate what may be popular next.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

I have recently had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on hair care products—I had some difficulties at first but it has been an excellent learning experience for me.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

As a recent graduate upon joining the Carolina Chapter, it was very helpful to have the opportunity to learn from other members about cosmetic chemistry. My degree prepared me for a job in the Pharmaceutical Industry and the SCC prepared me for my job in the Cosmetic and Personal Care industry. I served as the secretary of the Carolina Chapter which allowed me to get involved with all of the members and learn from them.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I grew up on a farm and love all animals. It was a big change to move to the “big city” of Charlotte but I love it now! I do not have room in Charlotte for all the animals that I was used to but my three dogs, Lennox, Griffin and Maddox make up for it!
