What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

My interest in the cosmetic/personal care industry began while I was in middle school. A friend of my parents worked as an engineer for a cosmetic manufacturer, this sparked my interest in the industry. Growing up I always enjoyed science, so I decided to major in chemistry in college. As a chemistry major, I realized that chemists are very valuable to the cosmetic/personal care industry. I knew that I wanted to pursue jobs in the industry after graduation.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
The advice that I would give to my younger self just starting in the industry, is to get involved in organizations such as the SCC early on. Involvement as a student or early in your career will provide you with an opportunity to gain knowledge about the different roles and responsibilities chemists have in the cosmetic/personal care industry.

What is the favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is being a part of the International Nomenclature Committee (INC), a committee who develops “systematic names internationally recognized to identify cosmetic ingredients.” Through the nomenclature process, I learn about new ingredients and technologies used in the cosmetic/personal care industry.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

My most recent professional accomplishment is completing my MBA and mentoring middle and high school students in STEM.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

Membership in the SCC has enabled me to meet and network with many experts in the cosmetic/personal care field. As an SCC member, I have gained a wealth of knowledge about the industry, via local MASCC meetings, the annual SCC meeting and the Journal of Cosmetic Science.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I enjoy kitchen science experiments with my nieces; examples include slime, bath bombs and lip balm. I also enjoy travelling with family and friends.
