What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

I was employed at the Environmental Psycho-Physiology Lab at Texas A&M University working on a project study for the PGA. My career plan was to use a recently awarded scholarship to get my Masters’ Degree at Dartmouth College in Social Psychology. A friend had reached out about a job opportunity in Dallas that was a Cosmetic/Personal Care raw material distributor. I was a curious, poor, grant project college student and interviewed for the position in Dallas. It was science, sparkles and beauty trends…all my favorites! I found my passion in the cosmetic industry.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Network, Network, Network, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people who have the career you idolize.

What is the favorite part of your job?

Working with customers with their creativity and formulation projects. Every day brings new challenges. I love to help problem solve, work with new concepts and learn new technologies. I do typically purchase these products after it launches. My bathroom counter and shower look like a salon/spa back bar hidden from public view.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

Winning the 2017 Top Sales Award at my company, becoming Area III Director (second term) and acceptance as a Marketing Fellow with the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. The classification of Fellow (Marketing) is intended to recognize general members who are engaged in technical marketing areas and have achieved full maturity in the profession as evidenced by a record of outstanding achievement and leadership.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

The Society is a valuable resource for education on cosmetic science based on the latest and greatest scientific information. There is so much misinformation out in the public that many products have received undeserved negative press. “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” – Aristotle

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I became a Girl Scout Leader for seventeen, seven-year-old Daisy girls at my daughters urging. I have been inspired by the Girl-Led atmosphere of respect and collaboration in the Girl Scouts Leadership. These girls have the confidence to take action and support their community. This month, I am really looking forward to making bath fizzies with girls and introducing cosmetic science.
