What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry? 
I am still very new to the industry, but I would tell my younger self to pursue a job that you are passionate about. If there is a job position that intrigues you or seems exciting go for it. I discovered my position as Formulation Chemist by chance, and I truly enjoy this career. Not only do I get to practice science, but I also get to bring out the creative and artistic side of myself. I would also tell my younger self to continue exercising your brain and to never stop learning. No matter how old you are, every day there is always something new to explore.

What is the favorite part of your job?

The favorite part of my job as a Chemist is that I am constantly learning and expanding my knowledge on a daily basis. Even if you have been in this industry for a long time, there are always new technologies to discover, new studies to review, and innovative formulas to create. I also enjoy getting a challenging brief from my marketing team and formulating a product for them that they are excited about launching. Seeing that product transition from the lab to the store shelf is very rewarding.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

My most recent professional accomplishment was creating about 40-50 new and innovative formulations, without having a director of the lab for guidance, and in a very restricting timeline. Facing these challenges and accomplishing these goals helped me to grow as a Chemist and gave me the opportunity to also acquire leadership skills in the process.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

Being a member of the SCC has been of great value to me because it has helped me to advance my education while also providing me with the personal networking system needed to succeed in the industry. The SCC gives its members a way to connect with others in the field which in turn has helped me grow in my career. I have always been a little shy, but my membership has helped me come out of my shell and join in on all the exciting things that this industry has to offer. I really enjoy the SCC’s Supplier’s Day in May. It is a great event to attend because it showcases all of the latest and greatest technology for cosmetics and personal care for the current year. Along with that, each SCC chapter holds great meetings with educational speakers which has helped me learn and network.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

A fun fact about myself outside of the SCC is that I am also a cake decorator in my spare time. I enjoy making cakes for weddings the most, but I am also the designated cake maker for all of my family’s celebrations. I even made the cake for my own wedding! I also, enjoy crocheting in the winter and gardening in the spring, summer, and fall.
