What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

My background is different from many SCC members I have met. I am an experienced materials scientist, but have been working in personal care for only six years. I have worked in a variety of industries. Most of the time I have worked at supplier companies, but without much contact with the end user. When an opportunity came up in personal care it was an intriguing way to learn about the science and technology that go into products used by consumers daily.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Ask questions, don’t be afraid to try new things, and have fun!

What is the favorite part of your job?

Looking at the results of a study and saying “that’s not what I expected”, or “that’s odd” and then working to find out the reason.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

Developing internal evaluation methodologies that can be used as substantiation to support product development

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

The educational seminars I have attended since becoming a member have contributed greatly to my knowledge in personal care science. Over time I have started volunteering to organize educational events, to share my expertise with other members. Membership in SCC is also of value for meeting other professionals in the industry, exchanging ideas and networking.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I have been watching Dr. Who since before it was popular – my first Doctor was Tom Baker.
