What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

When I was young, I was a member of two competitive dance and gymnastics teams. It was essential to learn the art of stage make-up and hair. We learned to use makeup in creative ways to highlight facial features under bright lights. Ever since then, I have been interested in the cosmetic sciences. I graduated from Albion College with a degree in Chemistry in 2007 and spent 7 years of my career as an analytical chemist before moving to the personal care industry.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Seek out any experience you can in science-related jobs, as this will serve to benefit your future career goals. Even if you do not start your career in this field, your various experiences will make you a more “well-rounded” cosmetic chemist.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I enjoy every aspect of my job including product development, claims testing, and technical support. My favorite and most rewarding part of my job is formulating in the lab, working with customers and teaching silicone technology.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

I was honored to receive a Dow Corning Technical Achievement Award in 2014. This award was given for the analytical testing I performed in support of a project in our Healthcare Department. It involved superior drug delivery enabled by silicones in topical formulations.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

The SCC has helped me with networking and educating me on current innovations in this field. The people I have met in the Michigan and Southwest SCC chapters genuinely want to get to know one another and support one another’s professional development.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I held three local titles and was a top-ten Miss Michigan finalist in the Miss America Organization. Through this program I earned many scholarships for college.
