What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

My father was a chemist working in the essential oil, fragrance industry. This gave me an early introduction to and developed my interest in chemistry and personal care products.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Our industry is a very dynamic one. For anyone just starting out, I would suggest that you attend the scientific seminars/meetings, read all the industry related literature, even if it is not directly related to the project you currently are involved in, as tomorrow it may be. Product development is not an island by itself, get involved as much as possible with marketing issues and keep up with constantly changing regulatory requirements. Also, listen to your suppliers: they are knowledgeable about the proper utilization of the raw materials.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I started out as a QC/QA Chemist in the industry. Using the experience gained in this field and by attending SCC Educational courses my role developed into product development. My interest in developing and improving personal care items remained the favorite part of my working life.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

I directed the development of a baby/child personal care line.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

The benefit of the SCC membership is the opportunity to attend the educational courses taught by the best in our industry. The membership also provides tremendous opportunity in attending the annual meetings, networking at the suppliers’ days and learning about the latest innovations within the industry.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I love to play with electric toy trains.
