Silicones: A Great Match for Sustainability and Performance- Presented by Kyle Ryder

Event Date: April 2nd, 2025; Time: 3-5 pm

Lake Erie Chapter Webmaster 0 0

Where: Slyman's Tavern Independence, 6901 Rockside Rd, Independence, OH 44131

Presenter: Kyle Ryder

Abstract:

In recent years, many cosmetic raw materials have been negatively portrayed by fearmongering and misinformation.  Silicones are near the top of the list of products under attack.  The categories of negative comments include product safety, environmental impact, and product performance.  As cosmetic formulation chemists and as scientists, it is our responsibility to educate consumers on what is and is not safe and effective.

In this presentation we will debunk each myth surrounding the use of silicones in Personal Care products.   There will also be a focus on the use of silicones in combination with or in place of natural materials.  Lastly, there will be a brief overview of many of the different ways the silicone backbone can be compounded and reacted with other materials to create unique and innovative materials.

Formulation Roadmaps - Presented by Tony O’Lenick

Event Date: June 4th, 2024; Time: NOON

Lake Erie Chapter Webmaster 0 0

Where: El Campesino Restaurante Mexicano - 4360 Kent Rd, Stow, OH 44224

Presenter: Tony O’Lenick begins speaking at 1:00 pm after lunch at noon

Abstract: Over the years more and more formulations are modified to provide a change the customer wants, or to remove some ingredient in response to a regulation. In fact, we have seen regulations for 26 “free of” formulation changes since 2009. These formulation changes need to be made quickly and effectively by the formulator. This presentation will address several related approaches to effective re-formulation. Formulation platforms are evaluated and optimized using knock out experiments, followed by minimally disruptive formulation and functional formulation. Surface active polymers optimize lower the surface tension of organic oils and thereby present a different aesthetic effect in cosmetic formulations. Since the formulation is 90%+ identical to the starting formulation, the time and work needed to evaluate change is minimized. Likewise, the toxicology of the formulation, the need for many raw materials and the cost change is minimized.

New Methods of Delivering Ingredients That Reduce the Risk of Microbial Contamination

Event Date: February 21, 2024; Time: 5 pm; Location: Vaccaro's Trattoria

Lake Erie Chapter Webmaster 0 0

Abstract: Consumer demand for cosmetic products that do not contain preservatives has led to an increase in products that reduce the risk of microbial growth by other means.  In some cases, it may be a result of the formula used.  Alternatively, certain product forms make it more difficult for microbes to flourish.  Waterless products are one example of a category can be developed without a preservative due to the low water activity observed in most formats.  A background on water activity will be discussed, and we will take a look at the waterless category and the variety of product forms within it that are being manufactured for the beauty and skincare industry.
