Presentation Abstracts:

Beyond the Label: What Dermatologists Should Know About Skin Care Product Development and Manufacturing, presented by Kelly Dobos
Dermatologists are increasingly called upon to evaluate skin and hair care products. The complexities of product development and manufacturing may be less understood but critical to safety and efficacy. This presentation offers a technical overview of how lab-developed formulations are scaled for commercial production, highlighting factors that influence product performance, including raw material variability and finished good specifications. Emphasis is placed on stability testing, microbial safety, and methods used to ensure consistency and reliability which are critical for maintaining integrity and consumer trust.

Testing Cosmetics: What the Dermatologist Needs to Know, presented by Zoe Draelos, MD
Cosmetics produce many profound skin changes. They can induce moisturization, improve barrier function, enhance skin luminosity, increase skin softness, and modify skin elasticity. Cosmetics can also cause allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, noxious sensory stimuli, hyperpigmentation, redness, and photosensitization. Thus, cosmetic testing is necessary for optimal product development to address these issues. Cosmetic chemists and dermatologists working together can enhance consumer product safety and use experience.

How to Read Data Like an Expert, Avoiding Pitfalls and Marketing Tricks, presented by Ross Pearlman, MD
Formulators, manufacturers, and brands rely on pre-clinical and clinical data to make critical decisions at each step of the product development process from product design to ingredient selection and beyond. For this reason, the critical appraisal of such data is an essential exercise. The value of data is directly related to the scientific rigor of the methodology underlying its origin and can be subject to significant flaws and biases, resulting in misleading claims or conclusions.

A well-controlled study design is essential to evaluating claims. The most common issue for preclinical and clinical studies involves absent or inadequate controls. For example, both positive and negative controls may be needed to differentiate between the performance of a series of active ingredients. In clinical trials, under-powering and ineffective blinding protocols reduce the value of data. Data visualization is also a frequent source of misrepresentation and careful evaluation can help stratify data value and integrity. By critically evaluating data quality, cosmetic chemists can gain significant insight into claims and make more robust, evidence-based decisions.

Effective Online Strategies for Cosmetic Science and Marketing, presented by Perry Romanowski
The internet and social media have become powerful tools for both educating professionals and promoting cosmetic products to consumers. This presentation will explore strategies for effectively leveraging these platforms to maximize reach, engagement, and credibility. We will discuss how cosmetic scientists and brands can effectively use various online channels for training & education. Emphasis will be placed on balancing technical accuracy with accessibility, tailoring content for different audiences, and maintaining transparency to build trust. Attendees will gain practical insights into creating impactful digital content, choosing the right platforms, and measuring success to enhance both education and brand visibility.
