Fundamentals of Surfactants, Emulsions, and Polymers for Cosmetic Formulations

Course Overview

Note: this is an *on demand* course where registrants will have access to a previous course recording, plus a current live Q&A session with the instructor. This course was originally taught and recorded in October 2022.

This will be a two-day online overview course on fundamental surfactant, emulsion, and polymer science required for direct practical applications in formulation design. The course will develop the fundamental understanding of the physico-chemical properties of surfactants, emulsions, and polymers that can impact the performance criteria (e.g. stability, foaming, cleansing, rheology etc.) of cosmetic and consumer products.

This course can be combined with High Throughput Formulation and Advanced Prototype Testing for a discounted price (see below).

Who Should Attend

This course will be of interest and value to scientists, formulators, supervisors, and managers engaged in development, formulation, production, analytical characterization of personal care and consumer products that require a good working knowledge of fundamentals of surfactant, emulsion, and polymer science.

Course Outline:

  • Surfactant Fundamentals
    • Classification of Surfactants
    • CMC
    • Kraftt Point, Cloud Point
    • Surface and Interface Properties
    • Self-Assembly
  • Emulsion Fundamentals
    • Classification of emulsions
    • Steps to make an emulsion
    • Emulsion instability mechanisms and stability enhancement
    • Emulsifiers and HLB
  • Polymers Fundamentals
    • Formation of polymers-polymerization reactions
    • Classification of polymers-thermosets, thermoplastics, polyetctrolytes
    • Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, glass transition temp
    • Polymer solution properties

High Throughput Formulation and Advanced Prototype Testing is an upcoming two-day, in-person classroom/lab course taking place in Miami, Florida on March 27 & 28, 2024.

If signing up for both courses, the recommended path would be to first view the on-demand course (Fundamentals of Surfactants, Emulsions, and Polymers for Cosmetic Formulations) between February 26-March 26, 2024 (including the Live Q&A on March 18), and to then participate in the live in-person lab course (High Throughput Formulation and Advanced Prototype Testing) on March 27 & 28, 2024.

This course path allows attendees to learn/review more fundamental aspects of colloidal science and cosmetic formulation, before moving on to the specialized high throughput formulation and advanced prototype testing topics of the lab course.
