High Throughput Formulation and Advanced Prototype Testing

Course Summary

With the increasingly competitive nature of the cosmetics industry, there is an urgent need to create truly differentiated products, and formulators are being asked to do so with ever more novel, sustainable/greener ingredients. 

This two-day course, mixing classroom instruction with hands-on lab work, will instruct participants on the principles and practices of high throughput (automated) formulation, along with advanced prototype testing (stability, particle sizing, rheology, tribology, surface tension). The aim is to give the cosmetic formulator a competitive advantage in creating high quality, unique products, both functionally and sensorially, while also maintaining awareness as to sustainability.

Who Should Attend

This course will be an ideal short course for:

  • Students completing undergraduate/graduate degrees in the chemical/chemical engineering/pharmaceutical sciences interested in roles in cosmetic and personal care industry.
  • Early career scientists/chemists/formulators working in the cosmetic and personal care industry.
  • Mid-career scientists/formulators/research managers in the cosmetic and personal care industry.

Note: course attendees should already have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of surfactants, emulsions, and colloidal science used in the personal care industry. These basic fundamentals WILL NOT be covered in this course.

Key Areas to be Covered:

  • Fast Prototype Formulation-High Throughput Automated Formulation-Platforms and Experimental Design - Automation is gaining increasing popularity in a large number of industries including the cosmetics industry to speed up formulation development. This section will focus on how to carry out fast prototype development through utilizing an automated formulation platform. Principles of programming the platform/software aspects will be discussed.
  • Prototype Evaluation and Optimization-Advanced Characterization - Competitive advantages in the cosmetic industry can be gained through the creation of truly differentiated products in terms of both functional and sensory performance. Sustainability adds an additional dimension to this.  Achieving these ends requires not only fast formulation development through high throughput platforms, as will be demonstrated in this course, but also gaining application specific mechanistic insights and establishing: Formulation-Structure/Interaction/Property-Performance Linkages. This will be demonstrated through the evaluation of prototypes for stability, particle sizing, rheology/texture, tribology/lubrication, surface/interfacial tension, surface/interface rheology and wet/dry combing.

Essential Course Components:

  • Develop a formulation (Hair Care) on high throughput platform-e.g. varying levels/type of silicone oil in simple surfactant base shampoo
  • Characterize-Interfacial Rheology/Surface Tension/Zeta Potential/Optical Microrheology.
  • Connect to direct performance on hair tresses through Dia-stron measurements

About the Instructor

Professor Samiul Amin, PhD

Professor Samiul Amin, PhD. is currently Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Manhattan College. Prior to joining academia in March 2018, Prof. Amin has worked in industry for the past 20 years working across Engineering, R&D and Innovation Management in global multinationals such as ExxonMobil, Unilever, L’Oreal and Malvern Instruments in Asia, Europe and the US. Prof. Amin’s expertise is in colloids & complex fluids, rheology, tribology, advanced characterization and formulation design of personal care, homecare and biopharmaceutical products. Prof. Amin’s research at Manhattan College is focused on formulation design and performance optimization of cosmetic and homecare products based on novel sustainable materials such as biosurfactants and biopolymers. Prof. Amin has a significant number of scientific publications/patents/book chapters in the area of complex fluids, rheology and cosmetic and biopharmaceutical formulations. He has served on scientific committees of multiple national and international societies such as the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and has Chaired and Co-Chaired multiple International Conferences and Workshops.
