Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Uncoated on Zinc Oxide on Aquatic Ecosystems

Abstract: The increasing use of uncoated zinc oxide (ZnO) in various personal care products has raised concerns about their potential adverse effects on aquatic life, especially coral reefs. This scientific presentation investigates the dangers associated with uncoated ZnO on aquatic ecosystems. The study integrates evidence from laboratory experiments, field observations, and ecological modeling to elucidate the toxicological, physiological, and ecological consequences of ZnO exposure on coral and reef organisms. Findings reveal that uncoated ZnO can induce stress in corals and disrupt their symbiotic relationships with microorganisms, leading to coral bleaching, reduced calcification, altered physiological processes and reduced growth. Additionally, uncoated nanoparticle ZnO exhibit enhanced toxicity due to their small size, high surface area, and increased bioavailability, posing greater risks to aquatic organisms. The presentation discusses the mechanisms underlying these adverse effects and highlights the urgent need for regulation and mitigation strategies to protect vulnerable aquatic ecosystems from the detrimental consequences of uncoated ZnO exposure.

Yannick Rigg is one of the Technical Leads at Vizor, the Zinc Oxide company that has delivered several innovations in the sun care space. At Vizor, he was one of the earliest employees and was responsible for the research and development that went into creating the two patents that the company currently holds. He continues to lead the innovation efforts and supports both research and data initiatives in partnership with 3rd party testing laboratories, as well as researchers globally. His experience spans 15 years across various R&D functions, including but not limited to material coating technology. He is a Scientist by discipline and has a Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science. When he is not pouring through data or putting in long hours in the lab, he enjoys travel, classic cars, and NY sports.
