Abstract
The development of differentiated oral care products addresses the consumers’ need and preference for long lasting effects. Mucoadhesive dosage forms for the oral cavity can provide enhanced benefits through prolonged retention of actives or flavors, acting as lubricating agents, and coating and protecting damaged tissues (lesions of the oral mucosa). The design of such products requires the use of excipients that impart mucoadhesive properties and ensures prolonged contact between the product and the oral mucosa. Case studies have been developed to demonstrate the value that mucoadhesion technology brings for differentiated oral care products. Various oral care ingredients and formulations have been tested by a method based on the in vitro oesophageal retention (IVOR) model that allows for mucoadhesion evaluation in a dynamic environment. A comparative evaluation of various materials (carbomers, carrageenan, cellulosics, copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride, xanthan) in simple gel systems indicated significant differences in retention time (from <1 minute, to > 30 minutes).
Enhanced retention through the use of mucoadhesive ingredients was demonstrated for:
· A mouthwash containing thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate and menthol, with other potential benefits like lubrication to help with xerostomia and cytoprotection for mucositis.
· An oral gel containing Sanqi (Panax notoginseng extract), a Traditional Chinese Medicine with hemostatic and anti-inflammatory properties.
· Oral films as a convenient form to deliver actives or flavors to the oral cavity.
The case studies conducted illustrate how differentiation in the market can be achieved with strategic ingredient selection, allowing for product innovation and new label claim opportunities.
