What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

As I was pursuing my undergraduate studies in Genetics & Physical Anthropology, I took a temporary Job at the Estee Lauder Companies. I had no prior knowledge of the cosmetic/ personal care industry before that, but after making my 1st cosmetic emulsion in the lab, I was hooked! I loved the idea of innovating a product from scratch, and bringing a small part of myself into creating every one of my products.

What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting out in the industry?
Get involved! Become a member, go to the meetings and seminars. Participate in as many events as you can, and make those connections within the industry. They will not only help you in your career, but you are sure to make long-lasting friendships along the way.

What is the favorite part of your job?

To be honest, there are so many favorites, I couldn’t possibly just pick just one! I really enjoy being at the bench and trying new materials and technologies, but I also like to serve as a mentor for all of the new chemists coming into the lab. I love to see my products on the market to see how well they are received, the experience and connection they create with the customers, and how they help bring out the best in everyone involved from conception to counter.

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

I recently created a two-phase oil for the Estee Lauder La Mer brand which launched very successfully, and won multiple awards globally. I am also very proud to be a member of EYO as well as ELC TTYWLS which helps girls to learn and become more involved in science.

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

I have been part of the SCC for 11 years, and ever since attending my first meeting, I have loved the SCC and what it stands for. It was amazing to me to see so many chemists coming together to share their knowledge and their love for the industry, particularly in my home chapter of Long Island. Every aspect of this organization has made me feel like I was part of a great family. It has allowed me the opportunity to participate in events and make associations throughout the entire cosmetic science community, domestically and globally. It has also been a great source of inspiration and constant learning that I have been able to take back with me to create the next great line of Estee Lauder products.

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I love to Dance, Travel and go on adventures! I actually spent 5 months of my life living in a tent in the rain forests of Madagascar researching lemurs and giant spiders. I am currently involved in the adventure of parenthood with my husband of almost 5 years and two beautiful baby boys, and I also love to read.
