The goal of the USDA’s BioPreferred® Program is to increase the use and purchase of Biobased products. Webinar speakers Kate Lewis, a senior analyst for the USDA’s BioPreferred® Program and Florencia Goren, the Vice President for Corporate Development and Strategy for Beta Analytic Testing Laboratory will give an overview of the BioPreferred® Program. Kate and Florencia will discuss what the BioPreferred® program offers the industry and consumers, and how the audience can navigate the process to have their ingredients or marketed formulations become USDA Certified Biobased Products.

About the instructors

Kate Lewis is a senior analyst for BioPreferred, a program that requires all Federal Government agencies to buy and use biobased products identified by USDA. Kate co-manages the development, marketing/sales, purchasing and evaluation of biobased products for the Federal, commercial and consumer sectors to advance the market for renewable ingredients and finished bioproducts made from agricultural materials. She pioneered the development of, and leads the implementation of, a voluntary biobased product certification and labeling effort launched by USDA in 2011. In the past eight years, 3,500 biobased products in more than 200 categories have earned the Dept. of Agriculture’s “USDA Certified Biobased Products” moniker.

Previously, she was a senior sales and marketing manager for the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program. She spent 14 years at EPA initiating, growing and evaluating the ENERGY STAR brand on commercial and consumer products. She began her work in the energy and environmental arena as a technical writer for an engineering consulting firm.

Kate has a BA degree in Rhetoric and Communications from the University of Virginia.

Florencia Goren is VP for Corporate Development and Strategy for Beta Analytic. She joined Beta in 2011, and her primary role involves developing growth strategy for the multiple laboratory services. Florencia is the head of Sales and Marketing, leading an international group based in various locations and managing global operations. Besides, she sits on the management committee for Beta Analytic developing overall company strategy with other senior company members.

Florencia Goren graduated magna cum laude from Florida International University where she pursued a double major in International Relations and Geography. In, 2011, Florencia Goren obtained an MSc. on Nature, Society and Environmental Policy from the University of Oxford.
