It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert E. Saute, who passed away on March 2, 2019 in Granada Hills, California, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born on August 27, 1929, in West Warwick, Rhode Island to Camile and Lea (Lily) Saute, Bob was a musically gifted student, and by the time he reached high school, he was playing trombone with dance bands around town.
He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science at Rhode Island College of Pharmacy—now University of Rhode Island—in 1950. Bob then went on to Purdue University in Indiana, where he earned both a Master’s of Science and a Doctorate in Industrial Pharmacy, with an emphasis on General Engineering and Pharmacology/Toxicology.
Robert joined the United States Army, and he served his country in the Laboratory and Pharmacy divisions of MASH units during the Korean conflict in both Sapporo and Sendai, Japan until his honorable discharge in 1955.
Back in the United States, Robert embarked on a decorated career in Pharmacy and Cosmetic Chemistry, first in Indiana, then in Pennsylvania.
Robert joined the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in 1953 and has been a member ever since. In that time, he has won the SCC Merit Award in 1996; serviced on numerous Committees; Constitution & Bylaws (1986), Publications Committee-Chair (1989), Publications Committee (1990), Strategic Long Range Planning Committee (1997), Constitution & Bylaws (2002), Merit Award-Chair (2012); held a number of Officer Positions; California Chapter Chair (1986), Director, Area III (1988-1990, 1995) and so much more.
Robert had reconnected with Arda Darnell, a classmate from Purdue, who he married in 1958 and remained happily married for 61 years. Robert’s career took him to New Jersey, where first son Richard was born; and later New York, where sons Steven and Allen joined the family.
Robert moved his family to California in 1971 where, by 1974, he and Arda founded Saute Consulting. With support from his family, “Dr. Bob,” as he was lovingly called, continued to innovate in the field of cosmetic sciences until his retirement in 2010. He made many friends and mentored many young scientists along the way, many of whom carry on his legacy of hard work and innovation.
Dr. Saute is survived by Arda, his beloved wife, sons Richard (Christy), Steven (Cindy) and Allen (Judy), as well as six grandchildren.
