What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

Honestly so many things. Growing up, I had skin issues so I would always be reading the labels of the different products I would use. This led to me researching ingredients and coming up with concoctions to try out. As a junior in college (majoring in chemistry), a professor had recognized that passion and told me about the SCC and graduate programs I could apply to for cosmetic science.

Another thing that inspired me to pursue this industry is the experience of “going natural”. To explain, I have naturally curly hair that I chemically straightened (“relaxed”) from the age of 15-23. To get my natural hair texture back, I had to do “the big chop” or basically, cut off most of my hair. Relearning my hair and embracing new products led to me to formulating in my kitchen and play around with products for my hair. As you can see, formulating plays a role in both my career and personal life!

What is the favorite part of your job?

I would say the creativity. I love that formulating is an art as much as it is a science. I also love how every day is different and you never know what your day will bring!

What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

My most recent professional accomplishment would be accepting a new role as a Senior Scientist in R&D Suncare! Another item to note was presenting research at the NanoFlorida 2019 International Conference where we placed in the competition!

How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

I have been a member of the SCC since 2015. It was how I was introduced to the industry. I’ve gained so much being a member and I love the community of scientists I’ve gained because of it!

What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

I am a proud Bahamian (or person from the beautiful islands of the Bahamas)! Being in Florida has been perfect for me so I can be near family and friends.
