AOCS Call for participation: Determination of free monochloropropanediols and glycidol in glycerol

AOCS is recruiting laboratories to help assess the utility of a new method for determination of free monochloropropanediols and free glycidol in glycerol. Can you join us?
3-monochloropropane diol (3-MCPD), 3-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters are process-induced contaminants considered to be of concern to public health. The European Commission is setting increasingly stringent limits in foods, and these contaminants are of increasing concern across a wide range of consumer products around the world.
Glycerol is an important feedstock for surfactants, cosmetics, and in skin care, and is a common ingredient in pharmaceutical drugs and foods. There is concern about the existance of monochloropropanediols and free glycidol in glycerol that may serve as a source in the final products – but there are questions about the accuracy of current methods used to assess these contaminants.
The AOCS community is working to validate a new method, Ea 10-2021, for direct, simultaneous determination of free monochloropropanediols and free glycidol in glycerol by GC-MS which may meet the need for convienient, reliable and accurate assessment. We are recruiting labs to participate in a collaborative study to evaluate the performance of this method and develop precision data.
If you, or others in your organization, would be willing and able to participate in this study please contact Scott Bloomer ( before July 25th, 2021.
