SKIN, HAIR AND NAIL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION AND ASSOCIATED
DISEASES
The skin is the bodys largest organ covering about 2 square
meters in the average adult yet in most places it is less than
2mm thick (1). Although we are all aware of our skin and its
state of health, few of us appreciate the complexity of its
structure and the diversity of its functions, which is further
discussed in detail in two general references (1,2). Such complexities
need to be considered when products are being developed to treat
and beautify this organ and some of these are discussed herein.
Substructures of the skin, e.g. hair and nail, have also provided
significant new business opportunities for the cosmetic industry.
While based on the structure of skin, these appendages have
their own distinct developmental characteristics and structural
evolution and these distinctions need to be considered when
cosmetics are being developed for beautifying these appendages. This
monograph provides an understanding of the normal structure
and function of skin. It builds on the brief review of the skins
structure and function by providing also a review of skin ageing
and hair and nail. It also provides a detailed description of
diseases of this organ that present a challenge to the cosmetic
and pharmaceutical industry. Thus this monograph covers the
following topics:
- substructures of the skin
- microenvironment of the skin
- skin problems and diseases
