SURFACTANTS
This monograph is intended to introduce practicing cosmetic
chemists to some of the principles of surfactant use. For this
reason, only those theoretical aspects of surface chemistry
are discussed which are believed to be important to cosmetic
formulators. The references cited in the text are not intended
to document specific concepts or to cite important experimental
data; instead, they are presented exclusively to help the reader
explore a particular topic in greater detail. For the sake of
this discussion, the term "surfactant" includes substances
that obey certain physical and chemical laws and, as a result,
exhibit properties useful to the cosmetic chemist. The utility
of surfactants resides in their behavior in solutions or suspensions
(aqueous or lipid) and their effect on interfaces (solid, liquid
and gaseous). Thus, any substance which does not have some physical
impact on interfaces (most commonly on interfacial energy) is
not a useful cosmetic surfactant. |
