NY Suppliers’ Day 2018 CEP Courses

On May 15-16, 2018, the NYSCC will host Suppliers’ Day 2018, one of the most important events on the industry calendar in North America. The event will take place at the Javits Center in New York City.

Admission into Suppliers’ Day is FREE, but attendees can expand their knowledge of cosmetic science the day before the event, on May 14th, 2018, as the SCC National Office will be holding three continuing education (CEP) courses at the Javits Center. Courses  offered include:

  1. Fundamentals of Using Colorants in Cosmetics and Personal Care Products  ,

Fundamentals of Using Colorants in Cosmetics and Personal Care Products

The incorporation of color in cosmetic and personal care products is part art and part science. What seems like a simple and fun exercise in pigment blending is reliant on a complex set of decisions. Factors such as the regulatory environment, cost, and stability as well as physical and chemical properties of each colorant all play an essential role in determining success in product development. This course will cover numerous topics including color theory, the regulatory environment and color quality control.

About The Instructor: 
KELLY A. DOBOS is a cosmetic chemist with expertise in both skin care and color cosmetic formulation. She is the cosmetics technical manager at Sun Chemical Corporation where she is a key technical liaison with cosmetic research and development groups in North and South America. She graduated from Oberlin College with a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and obtained a Master of Science in pharmaceutical sciences with an emphasis in cosmetic science from the James L Winkle College of Pharmacy (WCOP) at the University of Cincinnati. She is a recent recipient of the GOLD (Graduate of the Last Decade) Distinguished Alumni Award from the WCOP.


Speaking the Language – Basics in Scientific Terminology for the Cosmetics Industry

This CEP course is aimed at providing key fundamental knowledge in layman language to scientific terms used in our industry. Such can be related to skin biochemistry; chemistry and physics. It will cover: definition of keywords, skin structure and function, major cells and components, structure of genes, meaning of expression, definition and role of cytokines, enzymes and receptors. A special focus will be provided to skin aging as well as utilization of “omics” technologies (such as genomics, proteomics, lipidomics) and to the skin microbiome.

NAVA DAYAN PH.D. has 28 years of experience in the skincare segment, and has yielded more than 150 publication credits in numerous industry-respected journals and in four books. She has been awarded the In-Cosmetics Gold Award for innovation and commensurate recognition from the NYSCC and the CRS for excellence.  Dr. Dayan is the owner of Dr. Nava Dayan L.L.C, a skin science and research consultancy serving the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and personal care industries; dermal and transdermal. Dr. Dayan advises on product feasibility in skin care, composition of R&D plans covering efficacy and toxicology; planning, execution and data interpretation into claims, formulations, delivery for improved efficacy and attenuated toxicity.  Sample areas of expertise include:  drug-skin interaction, bio-markers (genomics and proteomics), skin/age related sensitivities, inflammatory skin disorders, innate immunity and microbiome. Scale Up and Processing Cosmetic Formulations

In the cosmetic industry, it is imperative that new products get from the bench to manufacturing as quickly as possible. This is the job of the Process Development Engineer and the process is called scale up.  The talk will discuss the different aspects of scale-up: heat transfer, addition rates and energy input as it pertains to batch size and different equipment.

About The Instructor:

DAVID YACKO was Vice President Research and Development at Estee Lauder Companies, Inc. which is one of the world’s leading cosmetic developers and manufacturers for 15 years. He had been with Estee Lauder over 25 years before retiring in 2016.  His department was responsible for worldwide scale-up for Estee Lauder Companies, Inc.  He earned his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana.  David has worked in the cosmetic industry for 40 years.  He spent 17 years with Chesebrough-Ponds in both Research and Development (13 years) and Manufacturing (4 years).
