1. What made you pursue a career in the cosmetics/personal care industry?

I was always intrigued by the cosmetic industry. My first chemist position was in the paint and coatings industry. When I first a saw copy of HAPPI magazine I thought this is the industry I want to work in. Shortly after that I found a job with a contract manufacturer formulating aerosol hairsprays, mousses and gels. I had found my place in the cosmetics industry.

2. What is the favorite part of your job?

I like the creativity of formulating. There are so many interesting and novel ingredients that can be explored. It can be extremely thrilling to have your creation mentioned in a trade journal or even read how users liked how the product made them feel better.

3. What has been your most recent professional accomplishment?

The Connecticut Chapter has given me many opportunities for professional advancement.  I was the Chapter Chair in 2010 and 2013 which was extremely fulfilling for me professionally.  From this leadership role, the chapter has allowed me to grow by organizing a full day seminar so that our members can more knowledgeable about our industry and improve his/her skill sets.

4. How has membership in the SCC been of value to you?

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists has been a tremendous value to me. It is great to discuss ideas, concepts, and scientific research with fellow members. The Society has given my insights into formulation, claims testing, and experimental design.  Also my membership gives me the opportunity “plug into” very experienced industry experts.

5. What is a fun fact about yourself, outside of the SCC and your professional life?

Through my affiliation with the SCC, I had the opportunity to “play in the minor leagues”. I suited up in an Aerosol Hairspray costume at a New Britain Rock Cats AA baseball game. I called myself Valve Kilmer and ran around the bases racing against young kids to promote awareness of aerosol packaging.
