OUR NEXT MEETING
WHEN:
Thursday, 17 September 2009

TOPIC:
"Novel Method of Encapsulating both Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Materials for Use in Personal Care"

SPEAKER:
Susan Jordan, PhD.
Senior Scientist
Dow Personal Care

ABSTRACT:
A novel Ethylene Oxide / Butylene Oxide block copolymers was designed to spontaneously form multi-lamellar vesicles with simple mixing. The copolymer is capable of encapsulating hydrophilic and hydrophobic actives; improving stability of actives and formulation compatibility. The vesicles are stable in standard formulations up to 50°C. Methods developed to measure active stability and encapsulation efficiency show vitamin C stability increases at least 50%, and encapsulation efficiency is 40 – 99%, depending on the active used. Avobenzone sunscreen photostablity is enhanced by encapsulating octylmethoxycinnamate in the vesicles. Because the vesicle is multi-lamellar (with many layers to go through), the permeability of actives out of the vesicle is delayed, increasing stability and shelf life. Actives are released from the vesicles upon drying and can increase the rate of fragrance release up to five fold.

SPEAKER BIO:
Susan Jordan received a BS in chemistry from the University of Delaware and a PhD in biochemistry from Hahnemann University. She determined the mechanism of dimer formation of the HIV protease and studied slow, tight-binding inhibitors while at Merck Research Laboratories. At Union Carbide Corporation she was the technology manager for the biocides group, leading the global R&D organization. As a developmental scientist at The Dow Chemical Company, Sue leads the personal care application development center which is responsible for identifying and transferring innovative Dow technologies to personal care. SatinFX is an example of one of these technologies.
